The disclosure of Iranian nuclear ambitions in 2002 led to an arm wrestling between Teheran and states such as France, the United Kingdom and the United States. After unsuccessful negotiation rounds, the United Nations Security Council voted resolutions sanctioning the Iranian uncooperative behavior. At the same time, Washington and its allies adopted unilateral sanctions with the objective to isolate the Ayatollah Regime and press it to cooperate. In order to break this isolation move, the Iranian authorities launched a seduction campaign looking for support in different countries of Latin America and Africa. For some, the Iranian State became the symbol of the opposition against the Western imperialism. For others, this nuclear crisis is an opportunity to stand as a key player on the international scene and to counter the influence of the traditional big Five (China, France, Russia, United Kingdom and the United States).
