Serbia: Sacrificing Kosovo for Europe?

by Georges Berghezan, researcher at GRIP

Abstract

On 9th September, the UN General Assembly adopted a joint Serbian-European Union draft resolution, in which it “welcomes the readiness of the EU to facilitate a process of dialogue” in order to “achieve progress on the path to the EU and improve the lives of the people”. Settled the day before by Serbian President Tadic and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Catherine Ashton, this text represents a radical U-turn of Serbian policy. Defense of Belgrade’s territorial integrity will now be subject to its European integration process. The “dialogue” that should soon restart will much depend on the creativity and the neutrality of EU-appointed mediators. But it will probably not be enough to bring under control the shock waves caused, in the region and further, by the declaration of independence of Kosovo.

Key words: Serbia, Kosovo, European Union (EU), General Assembly (GA), resolution, dialogue, independence.
